Getting a tummy tuck is an important decision, and patients need to do their research beforehand. As with any surgery, tummy tucks have potential risks and complications.
Thinking of investing in a tummy tuck? Here, Dr. Reza Kordestani of RK Cosmetic Surgery walks you through five things you need to know.
1. Your Weight Needs to Be Stable before the Procedure
Before getting a tummy tuck, you need to be within 10 to 15 pounds of your goal weight, and you need to maintain that size for 6 to 12 months before the procedure.
If your weight fluctuates significantly, in either direction, after having the procedure, the cosmetic effects of the tummy tuck can be affected. Women considering tummy tucks should wait until they’re done having children to have the procedure.
2. You Will Have a Permanent Scar
The scar will run horizontally above the pubic bone and its length is determined by how much extra skin you have. The scar does fade with time, but it will be visible for multiple years after the procedure.
A skilled surgeon will make it so the scar can easily be concealed under clothing, including swimsuit bottoms.
3. You Need Sufficient Downtime after Your Tummy Tuck
Tummy tuck is a major procedure, and you need at least 2 to 3 weeks of downtime to rest and heal.
After the procedure, you will feel tired, swollen and sore and you may experience redness, bruising and stiffness. Performing basic activities will be a challenge.
You should plan to take time off work and find assistance with childcare and household chores for the first few weeks post-surgery.
It can take 6 to 12 months to heal fully and for your final results to show.
4. Surgical Drains Are Put in Place
The drains serve to prevent fluid buildup and facilitate healing. They may stay in place for two weeks, but they’re usually removed in 7 to 10 days.
5. Your Results Can Be Permanent
If you have excess skin or fat in your abdominal area, a tummy tuck is an effective way to smooth and flatten your midsection and repair weakened abdominal muscles, resulting in a tighter, more sculpted physique.
