What Does Rhinoplasty Accomplish?

Rhinoplasty may be a good option if you wish to correct any of the following:

• Bump or depression on the nasal bridge
• Wide nasal bridge
• Drooping, upturned or bulbous nasal tip
• Crooked or asymmetrical nose
• Overly large or small, wide or unevenly sized nostrils
• Deviated septum, enlarged turbinates or airway problems

When performed by an experienced and talented plastic surgeon like Dr. Kordestani, rhinoplasty can have a tremendously positive impact on your life. A proportionate and more attractive nose will enhance facial harmony and flatter your eyes, chin and other facial areas. Because you will no longer feel self-conscious about the size or shape of your nose, you will have the confidence you need to hold your head up high and smile confidently in public and in photos. Depending on your specific case, rhinoplasty may also improve breathing function and your health by correcting structural problems. Procedure Details

Rhinoplasty (Nose Reshaping Surgery) Chevy Chase, MD

Rhinoplasty is performed using one of two incision techniques: open or closed. With the open technique, Dr. Kordestani creates an incision on the columella, the thin strip of skin in between the nostrils. This technique allows the surgeon the most visibility and control during the operation, and leaves a small scar on the exterior of the columella. The closed technique involves making incisions in the inside of the nostrils. While it avoids visible scarring, the closed technique limits the surgeon’s visibility when operating. Top plastic surgeons around the world, including Dr. Kordestani, prefer to use the open technique as it allows them to fully see all the deformities of the nose and correct them with precision and accuracy. The resulting scar is nearly invisible once it heals.

The details of your rhinoplasty operation will depend on your specific goals. For instance, Dr. Kordestani may remove skin, tissue, cartilage and/or bone to reduce the size of your nose. Or, he may utilize cartilage grafting techniques to add length or support to the nose or correct asymmetry. Other cosmetic problems, like uneven or large nostrils, or a bump on the bridge can also be corrected. Changes to the underlying nasal structure can be made to improve breathing or other functional problems.

Dr. Kordestani plays an active role in your aftercare. He will provide you with detailed instructions to follow during your recovery. You will meet with him until one year postoperatively to ensure you have no complications and are healing well.

Can a Rhinoplasty Improve Your Breathing?

Simple answer: Yes! Form follows function. When the nose is misshapen, it can sometimes affect function and impede proper breathing.

The nose is a central feature on your face. It can dominate a person's face in an imbalanced way, and distract from other beautiful features of the face. A rhinoplasty, aka nose job, helps to rebalance the face by reshaping one of its most prominent features - the nose.

Whether a deformity or area of concern was present from birth, developed during growth, or occurred as a result of trauma, rhinoplasty surgery may have a solution.
"A rhinoplasty helps to rebalance the face"

Dr. Reza Kordestani Specializes in Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty refers to creating an incision on the collumella of the nose, in between the nostrils, in order to fully see all the deformities of the nose and fix them.

This is different from a closed rhinoplasty, where no external incision is made.

While there is debate among plastic surgeons about which technique is better, the rates of revision surgery overall are higher with closed rather than open rhinoplasty. Many rhinoplasty experts throughout the world use the open rhinoplasty technique for the majority of their surgeries.

In most cases, it is easier to see and fix the issues of concern with an open rhinoplasty, and the incision is almost imperceptible once it has healed.

Are filler injections an option for the nose?

Filler injections are beneficial in many areas of the face and have dramatically increased the options for treating patients nonsurgically.

Filler injections for the nose, aka liquid rhinoplasty, can help reduce the appearance of a hump on the nose by filling the areas around it on the bride of the nose. This can improve the appearance of your nose when looked at from the side.

Breathing issues are much more difficult to fix with fillers instead of surgery, and care is required when injecting parts of the nose. In some instances, attempting to fix certain deformities with fillers instead of surgery may not be as successful nor permanent.

What can a nose job (rhinoplasty) surgery do?

Fix a deviated septum

A crooked septum may be congenital or due to trauma. It is one of the causes of breathing problems that can be addressed with rhinoplasty.

Decrease a dorsal hump

A dorsal hump, or bump on the top of the nose, is one of the most obvious characteristics on the side view, and it is one of the most common reasons for rhinoplasty surgery. The bump can usually be removed in order to create a straight nose from the side view.

Large, drooping, or hooked tip

A nose job can treat and refine the nasal tip in cases where the tip is large (bulbous), drooping, hooked, or any combination of the above. The refinement gives more balance between the different parts of the nose and also helps to match the rest of the face.

Projection of the tip

Another important ability of rhinoplasty surgery is the ability to decrease or increase how far the tip of the nose sticks out. This can help balance the nose by helping the projection of the tip match the length of the dorsum, or bridge of the nose.
