Liposuction Recovery Tips

Liposuction is a very popular plastic surgery procedure that sculpts beautiful body contours. However, before you can enjoy the many benefits of liposuction, you will need to take some time to recuperate.

Read on as Dr. Reza Kordestani, an experienced plastic surgeon with world-class surgical training, shares a general recovery timeline as well as some tips to enjoy a safe and swift recovery.

Basic Recovery Timeline

Your recovery will differ from other patients’ recoveries, based on factors like the location of the treated area, the amount of fat removed and your individual pain threshold.

With that in mind, most patients follow a rough recovery timeline similar to what is outlined below:

First few days after surgery: Bruising, swelling and some discomfort are common. Pain medication is prescribed to help alleviate discomfort. Compression garments should be worn to minimize swelling and help the skin conform to the treated area’s new contours. Bending, lifting, straining and unnecessary physical activities should be avoided.

One week after surgery: Post-operative side effects are milder and it is easier to move around. Many patients are able to resume work (some may opt to take an additional week to recover). Compression garments should continue to be used.

Three weeks after surgery: Swelling and bruising continue to subside. Patients can resume light exercise (e.g., walking on a treadmill, riding a stationary bike, gentle stretching) while still avoiding vigorous activity.

Six weeks after surgery: Nearly all swelling and bruising have resolved, and the results of treatment should be visible. Patients can resume weightlifting and all other forms of physical activities.

Up to six months after surgery: Dr. Kordestani continues to see patients for follow-up appointments six months after surgery, when the final results of liposuction are visible.

Tips for a Safe and Swift Recovery

The most important thing you can do after liposuction is follow all of the post-operative instructions provided by Dr. Kordestani. He will explain:

  • Medications to take to reduce the risk of infection/aid healing
  • Medications to avoid
  • How to care for the treated area and incisions
  • When to return to his office for follow-up visits
  • How long to wear your compression garment
  • Signs to watch out for that could indicate a potential problem

If you have any questions about the instructions that are provided to you, do not hesitate to call the office.

You should also focus on giving your body the things it needs to heal: plenty of rest, the proper nutrition and lots of water. Diet can play a big part in your recovery. Avoid foods and beverages that are high in sodium to limit swelling. Eat lots of fresh produce, lean protein and whole grains.

During the initial recovery, you should avoid strenuous exercise; however, short walks around your house or up and down your street can help your circulation and your healing progress. But be patient with your body; do not push it to do something that hurts or feels uncomfortable. When Dr. Kordestani gives you the go-ahead to resume your normal exercise routine, ease back into it slowly to avoid any complications.
