How Long Do Breast Implants Last?
Many people believe you have to change breast implants every 10 years as a rule. But generally speaking, this isn’t true.
Breast implants are medical devices that are safe and long-lasting, and modern implants are designed to last over a decade.
Complications can occur in rare cases, however, requiring the implants to be changed or removed. But breast implants don’t have an expiration date.
When Do Breast Implants Need to Be Replaced or Removed?
Implant complications are unusual but they can happen. Sometimes, an implant may fail due to a leak or rupture.
Breast implants are not fragile. But as time goes on, an implant shell can become worn out and rupture, causing a leak to occur.
In the case of saline implants rupturing, the implants collapse and look deflated. Silicone implants, on the other hand, are not as noticeable when they rupture and leak, and an MRI or ultrasound is usually needed to figure out whether the implant is still intact.

The other scenario in which implants may be replaced or removed is when patients decide they no longer want the implants.
A patient’s breasts may change in size and shape over time due to being pregnant, breastfeeding, gaining or losing weight, or getting older, and she may no longer like how the implants look. Or, she may simply decide she wants to have smaller breasts again.
In any case, breast implants can be safely replaced or removed to best suit a patient’s needs and preferences.
